Flight delays at Ibiza airport as a huge fire nearby fills the sky with smoke

  • This story is breaking, more to come

A massive fire at a warehouse near Ibiza airport has caused delays for cars traveling to and from the travel hub.

Around noon, smoke was seen coming from the Citubo warehouse, located in the Can Frígoles industrial estate, which is next to the runways of Ibiza airport.

A woman on a RyanAir flight landing in Ibiza managed to capture a video of the inferno and post a clip on TikTok showing the black plum high in the sky.

At least 13 flights from Ibiza traveling between 3pm and at least 5pm have been delayed, including a RyanAir flight to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, according to the website of Spanish airport operator Aena.

Arrivals have also been delayed, with at least 19 planes expected to land later than normal, including a flight from London Heathrow.

Smoke from the fire, which also spread to an adjacent building housing a car rental company, was reportedly visible for miles, as far away as Sant Antoni on the other side of the island.

The fire in the 1,000 m² warehouse has led to long lines of cars on the lanes entering and leaving the airport. No injuries or deaths have been reported, although an elderly man in the area had to be treated by emergency services for smoke inhalation.

Local media said workers at the warehouse, about 20 in total, were evacuated in less than two minutes.

The Sant Josep City Council, the local government, said the warehouse was destroyed in the fire and was expected to collapse soon, according to local media.

The warehouse, which is located behind a department store, reportedly contains a wide range of products including garden tools, furniture, lighting, household items and toys.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but police and fire brigades are still on scene trying to extinguish the fire, which is now under control.

The head of the local fire brigade, Miguel Sevilla, said the highly flammable material inside increased the risk of the fire spreading further.
