Fleur East reveals she ‘swore’ and ‘rolled around in agony’ while giving birth to her first child Nova on the floor as she returns to Hits Radio after seven months maternity leave
Fleur East shared a dramatic birth story on Monday as she returned to her Hits Radio Breakfast show after seven months.
The 36-year-old English singer sat down with her radio colleague James Barr to give listeners an in-depth look at the birth of her first child, Nova, including a twisted tale of “saucepans, swearing and the classic Whoopi Goldberg film Sister Act.”
The rapper welcomed Nova in March, at six months, with her husband Marcel Badiane-Robin.
Fleur told listeners: ‘I started having contractions and I was lying in the bath, just breathing, sitting in the bubbles, enjoying life and paying attention to the contractions.
‘I knew something was wrong, so I moved from the bath to the birthing pool that was downstairs in the living room. Marcel filled the bath with several pans, put water on the stove and put it on the table – we did it the old fashioned way!’

‘I thought, “This is amazing, the baby is coming any minute,” but after five hours I got out of the pool, my midwife checked me and I was 2cm dilated – that’s nothing! My face just dropped and the midwife left, saying she’d come back if anything happened!
The presenter said it all started when Marcel and her aunt Tina, who was also a midwife, watched some classic films, including Sister Act.
‘I was lying on the floor in my birthday suit when the midwife came back, and I was in pain. I started screaming, I started swearing and I never swear!
“I grabbed my aunt Tina’s face and rolled on the floor… I pumped out four gas and air canisters before they told me to push,” Fleur said.
“They tricked me into squatting by putting Marcel on the floor and telling me to sit on him – they knew what they were doing! – so little Nova was born on my living room floor, on top of my husband!” she concluded.
Fleur shared a joint post with Hits Radio’s official Instagram page on Monday to celebrate the singer’s return.

Fleur was accompanied by several women sitting next to her on the metro, all of whom were also breastfeeding their babies and wearing #FreeTheFeed badges.
Mother of one, Nova shares her firstborn with her husband Marcel, a French fashion designer.
Marcel is also a celebrity stylist and has worked with Rita Ora and Jason Derulo, among others.
They were invited to come on air by FemTech company Elvie as part of Elvie’s existing #FreeTheFeed initiative.
#FreeTheFeed is an invitation to stand with all women who have felt shamed or limited while breastfeeding or pumping.
Elvie launched the campaign in March, when they hung five giant inflatable balloons across London for Mother’s Day.
