Five phrases intelligent people always use to get noticed and succeed at work
A communications expert has revealed the five simple phrases sophisticated people use to stand out and succeed.
According to Jessica Chen, who coaches professionals on how to use language to get ahead, an employee doesn’t have to be loud to get people’s attention.
“It’s not about being assertive, dominant or aggressive if that’s not your style,” Chen clarified.
“It’s about being purposeful and smart so that when you give your opinion, people listen,” she wrote in her essay for CNBC.
According to expert Jessica Chen, the first simple sentence someone can say to sound intelligent is, “I hear what you’re saying.”
The second valuable statement Chen (pictured) recommended people use was, “I’m excited about this.”
The first simple sentence a person can say that appears intelligent and thoughtful is, “I hear what you’re saying.”
Chen explained that “brilliant communicators know that they must first make other people feel like they and their ideas are being heard, otherwise they won’t feel heard.”
Rather than interrupting a colleague during a meeting with something you want to say, the communications expert advises people to “listen attentively and wait until he/she has finished speaking.”
By prefacing what you want to say with the phrase “I hear what you are saying,” you show the other person that “you acknowledge him or her and his or her thoughts, even if you have a different point of view.”
The second valuable statement Chen recommended people use was, “I’m excited about this.”
The third special phrase that, according to the seasoned communicator, can lead to success is: ‘This is what’s new’
According to the communications genius, it is of great importance to connect with people on an emotional level, and not on a purely rational level.
“To communicate smartly, you have to use emotions and incorporate stories into your language,” Chen admonished.
To achieve this, people may use ‘words like “enthusiastic” and “enthusiastic” to gain support.’
To make the phrase come across fully, Chen insisted that people accompany the expression with raised eyebrows or a smile.
The third special phrase that, according to the experienced communicator, can lead to success is: “This is the news.”
Chen wrote: ‘One of the most important things you can do at work is to ask for what you want. Another is to push strategically to ensure you get a response.’
The communications authority revealed that the fourth key phrase for moving forward is ‘Then’
While most people start their follow-up messages with, “Hi, I’m working on my follow-up message here,” successful people make sure to provide new information when they bring something up again.
Chen gave an example: “Since our last conversation, where I presented project X, I’ve found some interesting data that supports my hypothesis about Y. Here’s what’s new.”
By providing this additional information you can help move the conversation forward.
The fourth key phrase for moving forward is “Then.”
According to the communications expert, it is important to use expressions such as ‘back then’ to talk about past achievements.
As Chen noted, talking about past successes can “create more opportunities.”
To avoid coming across as boastful, the skilled communicator advised people to use contrasts that emphasize “the progress you’ve made and the impact you’ve had.”
The last fundamental phrase that smart and successful people use is, “Thank you for…”
The last fundamental phrase that smart and successful people use is, “Thank you for…”
Chen revealed that intelligent communicators understand that it is not enough to thank people who help them. They are also specific about what they are grateful for.
“Being specific can increase your appreciation, make your gratitude feel more authentic, and lift the other person up.”
“It leaves a positive impression and can make people more likely to repeat the helpful action.”
