The men found Lee in shock with water up to his chest and his foot trapped between the center console and the seat.

The group first worked to remove the dog from the vehicle. Salmon jumped on the rear bumper after they noticed something moving in the back seat.

“I got on the rear bumper and tried to open the rear door, but all the windows were closed, but some guy gave me a knife and I hit the rear glass a couple of times.”

After the glass broke, the teen was able to get the dog out and throw it several feet across the frozen lake toward the other four. The dog landed in the water but was able to swim to safety and two of the men pulled the dog out of the water.

Salmon then climbed out the rear window to get to Lee, whose foot was trapped between the center console and the seat. Salmon said he had to pull up on the console to free the older man, who got stuck once more before he was able to climb out of the vehicle through the rear window with the help of one of the other men and Salmon.

The other men helped Lee up the snowy embankment and flanked him as they walked toward the Okoboji Shop.

Lee was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare. He and Cooper were uninjured.

‘I’m happy he was okay and the dog was okay. He was crazy at the time,” Salmon, who lost one of his shoes during the rescue, told the Des Moines Record.

The teenager, who is on the wrestling, soccer and track teams, was examined by EMTs for minor cuts and received a dry lock from the nearby Okoboji store, as were the other men.

“I had never done anything like this,” he told the local media.

Lee told the Des Moines Register that he wanted to “thank the people who helped and the store that took the dog out and dried him off.”

The Jeep was recovered on Sunday.
