Fish have rained from the sky on a remote inland town in a rare weather phenomenon not seen in the area for more than a decade.

Locals in the Northern Territory community of Lajamanu, which sits on the edge of the Tanami Desert and is 560 km from Katherine, were shocked by the phenomenon during a thunderstorm on Tuesday.

Lajamanu Central Desert and local councilor Andrew Johnson Japanangka explained that there was a “big storm” heading towards the town and that residents initially thought it would only bring rain.

“When the rain started to fall, we also saw fish falling,” he told the abc.

Japanangka said many of the fish were still alive after they fell from the sky.

Children collect them and store them in a bottle or jar.

Other fish were left in puddles scattered around the city.

Mr. Japanangka added that it was the “most amazing thing” the Lajamanu community had ever seen.

Fish also fell from the sky in the Top End community in 2004 and since 1974.

The inner city of Winton in central Queensland experienced the same phenomenon in 2016.

Meteorologists believe this event is caused by waterspouts or strong updrafts, like tornadoes, sucking water and fish out of rivers.

These fish then rain down hundreds of miles away.
