First look at actor Jonathan Groff filming Doctor Who is revealed

The BBC has released a first look of actor Jonathan Groff filming Doctor Who dressed in Regency style clothing.

The 38-year-old, a Broadway regular in the US known for the crime series Mindhunter, was previously announced to take part in the sci-fi series.

The BBC said he will play a “mysterious and thrilling” guest star in which he will “jump aboard the Tardis.”

New photos show Groff wearing 19th century fashion, complete with a blue tailcoat, an embroidered vest, dark slacks and a light blue tie.

He is shown alongside Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, who is about to take over the Time Lord, and Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s companion Ruby Sunday.

Gatwa, 30, can be seen in the images dressed in a red vest, cream trousers and stockings with coiffed hair tied back, while Gibson wears a yellow dress, white gloves and gold jewellery.

The BBC teased the new episode, saying: “Dress to impress and watch out for the Duchess…”

Groff, who rose to prominence for the role of Jesse on the musical comedy-drama Glee, also starred in Knock At The Cabin and the LGBT+ comedy Looking and played Holden Ford in the serial crime drama Mindhunter, which is about two late 1970s FBI agents who delve into the psychology of murder.

The latest revamp of the long-running series sees Russell T Davies return as showrunner, transvestite Jinkx Monsoon star as the “most powerful foe yet,” and Heartstopper actress Yasmin Finney taking on the role of Rose.

In November, Doctor Who returns for three special episodes starring David Tennant as the 14th Doctor to mark the show’s 60th anniversary.

Gatwa’s first episode as the 15th Doctor airs during the festive period, with Gibson, 18, becoming the youngest companion in the show’s history.

Doctor Who will air on the BBC in the UK and Ireland and streaming platform Disney+ will show episodes to the public elsewhere.
