A hilarious one TikTok video documented the moment a New Yorker called the fire department to report an apartment fire, which turned out to be a wood fire video on a TV.
In his video, Kieran Murray – who goes by @KieranKnightley on TikTok – showed what he thought was an apartment fire and fire trucks rushing to the scene.
The 25-second video has been viewed more than seven million times in just a few days and has received around 935,000 likes and thousands of comments.
Murray called it the “craziest thing” and described the moment firefighters told him the fire was actually just a fireplace on an eight-foot television.
“I think I would die of shame,” one person wrote.

The 25-second video showed at least two fire trucks running to the scene to investigate
The short TikTok begins with Murray walking down the street as the lights of a fire truck appear to shine on his face.
“The craziest thing just happened,” he says, recounting the day’s event. “I saw a fire in a building and called 911.”
The video then cuts to clips of loud fire trucks driving down a New York City street, ostensibly in response to the fire Murray reported.
“But it turned out to be just an eight-foot TV with a Christmas log on it,” he says.
“So I ran downstairs and I was like, ‘This is what I saw,’ and they were like, ‘Yeah man, it was a Christmas log, what are you doing?’
The video ends with Murray chuckling embarrassedly before stopping.
More than 5,000 people commented on the TikTok video, expressing their own shame and applause for the man who took action.
‘Earth, swallow me and spit me out in Bali 😂😂 Nothing to regret though.’
‘I certainly would have called. That’s far too realistic.’
‘You did the right thing. It’s really better to have called and it’s a false alarm than to have an actual emergency and everyone ignores it.”
“The best way to know you’ve gone too far with your TV upgrade.”
‘A Christmas log…IN OCTOBER?!’
“I want the POV of the person who just had their Christmas log on TV and suddenly the fire department shows up.”
“I mean, if you set an eight-foot TV on fire, you might be able to draw the shadow.”

Many online said Murray made the right decision to call the fire department
In a follow-up to Tiktok, Murray talked his 91,800 followers through his thought process on why he chose to reach out for help.
“I went to the window and there was a building on fire, okay?” he said.
“And it was such a big fire that I thought, ‘If I hesitate for even a second, this whole building is going to collapse,’” Murray continued.
“Yeah, I should have waited to see if there was smoke – there’s no smoke, okay, whatever. What would you have done,” he says.
He ends the video by asking, “What is a Christmas log anyway?”
Below that video, commenters agreed with his decision to make the call and supported his “embarrassing” moment, saying they would have done the same.
‘No, you did the right thing!! Would have done the same,” one person wrote.
The motto of New Yorkers is: “If you see something, say something!” Don’t worry, you did the right thing,” another shared.
‘You were absolutely right! The bystander effect is so real and you didn’t get sucked into it. 100% did the right thing,” a third wrote.
‘It’s better for someone to call something and it’s nothing, than not to call and it’s something. It can make a life and death difference,” another added.
