Backpackers have been sent onto the streets after a fire destroyed a hostel in Sydney’s popular Kings Cross area.
Emergency services arrived on the scene before 9am on Wednesday and the street was cordoned off.
Six fire engines and 22 firefighters are working to contain a blaze that has been swept by Mad Monkey Downtown Backpackers on Darlinghurst Road in Potts Point.

A NSW Fire spokesperson said the building was ‘well alight’.
He said at least one person suffered burns to his legs after evacuating himself from the fire – the man in his 20s was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital.
The fire brigade will soon search the building for people who may be trapped.
The fire brigade is also busy with another job at the location, with the call coming in at 9.17 am.
Police and ambulance personnel are also on site.
