Fiona Bruce caused concern among Question Time viewers on Thursday evening when she appeared on the BBC program with a ‘black eye’ and her arm in a sling.

The BBC star, 59, was in Wolverhampton to discuss the big political issues of the week, but before starting the debate with her guests she discussed her injuries.

She told viewers she had an unfortunate accident while horse riding, explaining: “I just thought I’d mention it.”

‘It’s the least interesting thing in the program, but in case you were wondering. I broke my hand and have the remains of a black eye from falling off a horse.

“And that’s all I have to say about that.”

Fiona started riding in 2011 and explained in a 2021 interview with The Daily Mail that she was not an expert.

‘I only started riding horses at a later age. ā€œIā€™m always going to be pretty rubbish, but I love it,ā€ she said.

‘It takes me to another place. While I’m at it, I can’t think of anything else. I like being around horses. I like the speed. I like being outside.’

Last year, Fiona admitted she was embarrassed about exercising by her GP, who made her feel ‘mortified’ about her lack of exercise.

She explained how the doctor was ‘so shocked’ that she did ‘literally no’ physical activity before undergoing the big change when her first son Sam, 21, was born.

The television journalist said: ‘I never exercised until I went to a GP before or just after I had Sam.

“When asked if I exercised, I said, ‘None,’ and the doctor replied, ‘Literally none?’ I said no.’

‘I was shocked because she was so shocked, so I decided to do something.

‘For me, exercise is not about living longer, but it gives me energy and I don’t know what I would be like without it.

ā€œI’m definitely getting mental benefits. If I’m stressed at work or if I’m stressed because I have a lot to do, I find that very useful.’

In 2016, Fiona described the way she heard her bone break during the trampoline accident that led to her presenting the news in her trainers.

The journalist and presenter caused a stir when she was spotted wearing a pair of white trainers to read the news.

Bruce told the Radio Times that her shoes were chosen because she broke her foot while trampolining with her daughter Mia.

She said: ‘I was about three meters above the ground when I landed and broke my heel and dislocated the bone above it. I actually heard it.

‘I was supposed to go skiing three weeks later, so I was hoping I hadn’t ruined it.

‘But it was very painful and it swelled to the size of my thigh… so I realized I needed help.’

The newsreader underwent emergency surgery and had a five-inch metal screw and metal brace placed in her foot.

She said: ‘I was in a plaster cast for nine weeks and in an air boot for six weeks.

‘My surgeon said it will take a year to fully recover and it will never be the same again.’
