Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s skill trees are full of promising decisions and flashy moves
Of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in less than a month we were invited try a preview build of the role-playing game (RPG) for ourselves. This included a look at character customization for the upcoming game, including Rebirth‘s new skill trees.
Not much is known yet about how these trees would work. Ny Breaking Gaming (TRG) is pleased to report that the new ‘Folio’ system is not only promising, but also builds on some classic Final fantasy staples.
Characters inside Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth each has access to a unique ‘Folio’, a library of potential skills and improvements connected by nodes. New nodes can be unlocked by spending points obtained by leveling up or through certain books found in the wild. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s Folios open up like trees, with different branches for players to choose from – a contrast to the more direct and linear offering of its predecessor Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
In Remake, you can customize characters by upgrading their weapons. However, the freedom of choice that these upgrades brought was often very limited and often provided minimal stat increases. Other way around, Rebirth‘s Folios offer big stat buffs and brand new moves, including plenty of specialized synergy attacks – tag-team abilities where party members attack together for stronger effects.
Fans of Final fantasy 10 will recognize this system as similar to the ‘Sphere Grid’ found in the 2001 RPG. Considering that Yoshinori directed and produced Kitase Final fantasy 10 and acts as producer Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthit makes sense that the two games share some mechanics and design philosophies.
Although we’ve only scratched the surface in our hands-on preview, the ‘Folio’ system looks to offer meaningful character customization, giving us plenty to look forward to in the run-up to launch.
