Fighting for equality the right way

On April 23, Sam Pitroda, until Wednesday chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, drew our attention to the problem of inequality. Major inequalities in income and wealth are abhorrent in any society. The problem is finding a solution and not fighting it the wrong way.

Highly progressive taxes on income, wealth and inheritance, and in extreme cases even state ownership of the means of production, have long been tried. They failed to achieve the desired outcome, and at worst resulted in the erosion not of inequality, but of the state itself, as in the former Soviet Union.
