Field hockey match erupts in gunfire as shooters send St. Louis University and La Salle players scrambling for cover

A hockey game in Philadelphia erupted into gunfire, sending players, coaches and officials running for cover.

Footage of the hectic scene shows players from both St. Louis University and La Salle abandoning their equipment and running inside. One referee slips or ducks behind the goal before getting up and running into an open garage.

An update was immediately posted to St. Louis University Field Hockey’s X account, explaining that no one was injured.

“Today’s match in La Salle has been canceled due to a shooting near the field,” the message said. ‘Everyone is safe.’

A spokesperson for St. Louis University declined to provide additional information when contacted by DailyMail.com. However, Philadelphia police say the shooting happened in a nearby Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot.

The shooting took place at Temple’s Howarth Field, where terrified players took cover

“An offender fired a handgun from the parking lot of Kentucky Fried Chicken,” said a police statement to DailyMail.com. ‘The perpetrator fled before the police arrived. No shooting victims have been found. The scene was secured, there was no arrest at this time and no weapon was recovered. The investigation is active and ongoing with the Central Detectives.’

The perpetrator was described as a “black male wearing a black hoodie.”

The shooting took place near Howarth Field, which is actually part of nearby Temple University in South Philadelphia.

After the shooting, the game was decided because the minimum of 48 minutes had been played under NCAA rules.

Roos Pasveer gave La Salle a 1-0 lead in the third quarter and that turned out to be the decisive goal.

St. Louis University’s website harmlessly described the shooting as a “disturbance.”

“The game was stopped in the fourth quarter due to unrest in the area surrounding the field,” the school’s athletics website said. “SLU student-athletes and staff are safe.”
