Fernanda Torres returned to the spotlight on Tuesday for the right reasons when she made her first public performance since she was forced to apologize for wearing Blackface makeup in an uncomfortable comic sketch.

The Brazilian star is one of the contenders for the best actress at the next 97th annual Academy Awards thanks to her role in biographical drama of foreign language Ainda Estou Aqui (I am still here).

But the remarkable performance was overshadowed after a 17-year-old clip of her appearance appeared in the Brazilian TV show Fantástico this week.

Torres, 59, played several characters in the show, including someone who wears racial inflammatory blackface-make-up unwise.

With the material in the poorly timed turnout, she returned to public life when she attended the presentation of Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer during Paris Fashion Week.

The actress looked elegant in a radical black dress from the French fashion house while posing for photos for the show.

APOLEGEN FOR her unfortunate Fantástico -sketch in a recent explanation TermShe said: ‘Almost twenty years ago I appeared in Blackface in a comic sketch of a Brazilian TV program.

‘I’m very sorry about this. I make this explanation because it is important for me to tackle this quickly to prevent further pain and confusion

‘At that time, despite the efforts of black movements and organizations, the consciousness of the racist history and symbolism of Blackface had not yet entered the regular public consciousness in Brazil.

“Thanks to a better cultural concept and important but incomplete achievements in this century, it is now very clear in our country and everywhere where Blackface is never acceptable,” she continued.

‘This is an important conversation that we must continue to have together to prevent the standardization of racist practices then and now.

“As an artist and world citizen, and from my open heart, I remain attentive and dedicated to the pursuit of vital changes needed to live in a world without inequality and racism.”

Torres broke several other barriers with its Golden Globe victory, which was the first in that category for a Latin American and Portuguese-speaking actor.

She is also in a rare company after earning her Oscar nomination, because only one other Brazilian actress has been nominated earlier – her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, 95, for the 1998 Film Central Station.

The show with the Blackface Display from Torres, Fantástico, is still broadcast every week on Sunday evening.

It originated in 1973 as a black-white variety series with a mix of musical versions, dance numbers, dramatic scenes and comic sketches, together with news broadcasts.

After 15 years, the show went from a pre-given affair to a live broadcast, and in 1993 it was re-devised as a TV newspaper magazine, but it remains entertainment segments.

The offensive sketch of Torres was reportedly entitled The Opposite Sex: The Family (Father vs. Mother), and it contained her and a male actor.

According to Deadline, Torres and her Costar both directly spoke the camera as several characters, while the sketch interpreted humorous whether mothers or fathers were more important for families.
