Ferdinand leads tributes to former Man United star Van der Sar, who was taken into intensive care

Rio Ferdinand leads messages of support for former Man United teammate Edwin van der Sar, who has been admitted to intensive care in Croatia with a brain haemorrhage

Edwin van der Sar’s former teammates and fans have sent him their best wishes following the news that he has been hospitalised.

Edwin van der Sar had a cerebral hemorrhage on Friday. He is currently in hospital in intensive care and is doing well given the circumstances,” Ajax said in a statement on Twitter before wishing him a speedy recovery.

‘Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking about you.’

Another of his former clubs, Manchester United, joined in as they tweeted, “Sending all our love and strength to you Edwin.”

Van der Sar’s former teammate Rio Ferdinand has also wished him well, writing: ‘Ed is a fighter. Our thoughts are with the Van der Sar family!’.

Fulham, another former club of Van der Sar, also sent their messages of support.

The Cottagers wrote: ‘Everyone at Fulham Football Club wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking about you.’

It was previously confirmed that the former goalkeeper had been admitted to a hospital in Croatia when he was flown to hospital by helicopter while on holiday.

This news comes more than a decade after Van der Sar was given a compassionate leave from Man United to be with his wife Annemarie van Kesteren after she too suffered a brain haemorrhage that left her ‘very ill’.

Ajax confirmed the news on Friday and wrote: ‘Edwin van der Sar had a cerebral haemorrhage on Friday. He is currently hospitalized in intensive care and his condition is stable.”
