A female jockey is in a critical condition after an incident in Gatton, Queensland, on Thursday afternoon.

The remaining races of the day were canceled after Emily Pomfrett was taken to hospital following a serious incident on track.

According to The Courier Mail, Pomfrett's horse, Wanta Willow, spun on top of her before the race started.

Queensland Jockeys Association boss Glen Prentice confirmed Pomfrett had been flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in nearby Brisbane.

“The ambulance sedated her on the track before transporting her to PA hospital with suspected sternum, lung and brain injuries, but too early to tell more,” he said.
