The Klooster or Flemish Hunting Deck is the only known complete card game of 52 cards from the 15th century.

The cards come from the South of the Netherlands and contain four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, jack and ten number or pip cards.

The suits are not the well-known spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts, but are based on hunting equipment: horns, collars, dog leashes and hunting slings. The value is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the symbol.

It is believed that the figures are based on Burgundian court costumes, with the cards dating from before 1480.

In 1983, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchased the set for $143,000 from a shrewd Dutch antique dealer who had bought it at auction for $2,800 a few years earlier, after noticing that they were much older than the stated date from the 16th century. .

The precise game played with the cards is unknown. It may have been Gleek, a three-player trick-taking game, with elaborate rules, that was popular in the 16th century.

The game used a normal deck with the 2’s and 3’s removed, so there were 44 cards.
