Columbus, Ohio — Federal officials have notified the former Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives that they have closed their investigation into him and that no charges will be filed against him.
Cliff Rosenberger, a Republican from Wilmington, had resigned in 2018 after it emerged he was the target of a federal investigation into his travel and spending practices in public office. He has long maintained that he made no mistakes.
Kenneth Parker, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, sent a letter to Rosenberg’s attorneys last week stating that “extremely unique facts and circumstances” led him to determine that Rosenberger is no longer the subject or target of a research is. Parker did not elaborate further on the decision.
“I cannot express my gratitude to all my family and friends who have stood by me over the past six years,” Rosenberger said in a statement. “It feels so good to finally be proven right on all charges.”
Rosenberger was elected Speaker of the Ohio House in 2015. Three years later, he resigned after federal investigators seized state documents documenting his out-of-state travel.
