Fed-up radio star slams Channel Seven’s coverage of the Brownlow Medal: ‘It’s the opposite of entertainment’

  • Ross Stevenson has criticised the reporting on the Brownlows
  • Radio presenter would prefer the event to focus on the count
  • Says Seven’s coverage of the event was over-produced

Radio star has slammed Channel Seven’s coverage of the Brownlow Medal, criticising the broadcaster for failing to recognise that football nights are all about voting, not irrelevant entertainment.

Seven showed off the glitz and glamour of Melbourne’s red carpet on Monday night, with Carlton star Patrick Cripps taking home the illustrious prize with a record 45 votes.

After three years of close results, this is the most impressive victory since Brisbane Lions’ Lachie Neale won the first of his two Brownlows by 10 votes in the Covid-shortened 2020 season.

3AW Breakfast presenter Ross Stevenson disagrees with the coverage of Brownlow, saying the event should focus more on the actual vote count.

β€œI tried to watch the Brownlow last night but there was so much redundant information,” he told co-host Russel Howcroft on Breakfast with Ross and Russ.

‘Wasn’t it much better when they just counted the votes?’

Stevenson went on to say that reporting should not mention the small list of players still in contention to win the prize as votes are counted, as this would “ruin” the event.

β€œIt ruins the evening,” he explained.

“It goes like this: ‘These are the only ones who can win, don’t worry about anything else’… Just count the votes!”

The radio host argued that the whole thing was too produced.

β€œIt’s the opposite of entertainment,” he said.

Stevenson wasn’t the only football fan to be irritated by the evening’s coverage. There were also many complaints about the Welcome to Country speech that was given before the ceremony began.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration over the speech, which acknowledged Australia’s indigenous heritage.

‘F**k me to death. So now the Brownlow Medal has a Welcome to Country!! What a f**king joke,’ fumed one.

Another added: ‘This Aboriginal takeover of the entire AFL is a f**king joke. Disgusting. You and your Aboriginal mates can fuck off.’

A third commented: ‘Welcome to the Brownlow coverage country, are you serious?’
