Fears for Briton, 65, with Alzheimer’s disease who disappeared during ‘last holiday’ with wife in Spain: missing man left hotel at 4.30am and headed towards port

  • He got out of bed early Sunday morning and has not been seen since

A British tourist with Alzheimer’s disease has gone missing while on holiday in Barcelona, sparking a frantic search by his concerned family and police.

David Moore, 65, is on holiday with his wife Christine, 60, and two friends Donna McCarron-Flynn, 55, and Mark Flynn, 56.

But David got out of bed at 4.30am on Sunday and walked out of the hotel under his own power – and hasn’t been seen since.

The trip is David and Christine’s “last vacation” together after David was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023, his friends say — the same year his son died.

Friends have been scouring the streets ‘non-stop’ since David, from Edinburgh, who is severely disabled, was spotted by hotel staff as he walked towards the harbour.

Relatives in Britain have called taxi companies to track him down – and Donna and Mark are meeting with the police and the consulate today.

Friends have printed hundreds of flyers, hand them out and stick them on lampposts.

Donna, a church pastor from Edinburgh, Scotland, said: “David was unhappy and confused. He kept saying he wanted to take the bus home. He seems obsessed with taking the bus and forgetting that he was in another country.

‘He’s six feet tall, he shuffles his feet as he walks and shrugs his shoulders. He uses his hands to hold onto buildings as he walks down the street.

‘When he walks, David sways a lot from side to side because he loses his balance. He walks like he’s drunk.’

The group traveled to Barcelona on April 2, with Donna and Mark playing a caring or chaperone role for their friends.

David was seen leaving the hotel wearing a thin navy blue zip-up jacket, jeans and gray trainers.

At 7:15 a.m. on April 7, Donna and Mark woke to a phone call from Christine, who had woken up to find the hotel room door open and David missing.

Donna said: “My husband ran out of the hotel to look for him and was searching for a few hours. We checked the hospital – we hope he was taken to the hospital. We are close to the marina and he walked that way.

‘We strolled through the streets and doorways, handing out leaflets and talking to everyone along the beach. We printed out hundreds of A4 flyers, hung them on lampposts and handed them out to taxi drivers.

“Christine is crushed, she is absolutely terrified, she is numb and cannot process anything at the moment.”

The British Consulate and police have been contacted for comment.
