Mohammed Almaru, 42, of Chicago, was sentenced Monday to 55 years in prison for the murder of his 17-year-old daughter, Mia Maro

Almaru had his daughter beaten to death with a metal pole and a rubber mallet after looking through her phone and discovering that she was ‘lying’ to him about things

His attorneys sought to reduce his sentence and filed a motion seeking an immediate new trial. But the judge denied it and said Almaru must serve 100 percent of his sentence. ABC7 Chicago reported.

Although he will still receive credit for the more than two years he has already spent behind bars, he will be 97 years old by the time he is eligible for release.

A few days before the murder, Mia confided to family and friends that she was afraid of her father.

She had sent a text message to a relative saying she was in a fender bender and was afraid her father was going to “beat her up,” and was even afraid he was “going to kill her.” Fox 32 Chicago reported.

Her aunt Randa had sent several text messages to her niece, aware that she had not been to the prom. All her attempts to check in went unanswered. She was worried and went home two days after the ball.

In a ruse to get Almaru to let her in, Randa planned to buy marijuana from him.

When she entered the family home, Randa was asked to sit with Audrey, his disabled wife who suffered a non-specific brain injury in 2019.

Almaru suddenly disappeared.

Then the aunt heard gurgling from a room in the house and went inside to find Mia under a blanket, lifeless, and the father who had tried to commit suicide.

Almaru lay next to his daughter’s body with self-inflicted wounds to his wrist and throat. He had also taken several narcotic pills.

He was taken away on a stretcher to be intubated at the hospital. CBS Chicago reported.

Other family members soon arrived at the house, distraught and screaming at the scene.

In the days before her death, Almaru forbade his daughter from attending her ball. She was murdered just months before graduating from high school, where she then had plans to attend college and become a dental hygienist.

Her father beat her to death with a metal pole and a rubber mallet after he searched her phone and discovered she was “lying” to him about things, according to charging documents.

Prosecutors said he also got into an argument with his daughter about attending her school’s prom, which he initially agreed to before changing his mind and stating he “didn’t trust her.” NBC5 reported.

In the letter to his son after the murder, Almaru said: ‘I went crazy, lost control and beat her up… I messed up big time, I’m sorry. .’

‘I lay down with her, I was unconscionable [sic] and woke up to her cold body,” he told his son.

Mia was a senior at Victor J. Andrew High School and had plans to attend college with the goal of becoming a dental hygienist.
