Father relives the terrifying moment his newborn daughter turned ‘deep blue’ after his wife gave birth in the front seat of his LandCruiser on the way to the hospital: ‘Why isn’t she crying?’

  • Macy Graham was born in the breakdown lane of the Mitchell Freeway in Perth
  • Newborn was born while his father Courtney was taking his wife Wendy to the hospital
  • The lightning-fast birth seemed to take a terrible turn when the baby turned blue.

A proud father described the frantic moment his wife gave birth to their daughter on the side of a busy highway, from the front seat of his LandCruiser Prado.

Courtney Graham told Daily Mail Australia that he “pushed” his wife Wendy into his four-wheel drive and was taking her to hospital in Perth at 5am on Monday morning after she went into labour.

But things took a dramatic turn along the way.

“I think the baby is coming,” she announced, since they were still a long way from King Edward Memorial Hospital.

So the father drove through four lanes of traffic, knocking over roadside cones, and parked his Toyota in the breakdown lane of the Mitchell Expressway.

By the time he jumped out of the driver’s seat and reached his wife’s side, Macy was more than halfway there.

‘I thought there was no way this was going to happen on the motorway. But yeah, it was just two big pushes and she was out,” she said.

“I just grabbed her by the neck and put her on my wife’s chest and called triple zero,” he said.

But the call quickly turned scary as Macy was turning a deep blue all over.

It’s turning blue! Mr Graham told the operator, who repeated ‘is he turning blue?’

‘Yes, the baby is turning blue.’

Then the frightened mother Wendy added, ‘Why isn’t she crying?’

She later said the paramedic calmly told her to wipe the baby’s face, prompting “a babble” and Macy’s first breaths, much to the couple’s relief.

Mr. Graham admitted that he was “eating himself up” until those first few breaths came.

The doctor said that Macy, who weighs 3.47kg, is now perfectly healthy despite the unusual birth.

“It’s an incredible story,” he said. “We’re so excited to tell our story and brighten people’s days with some good news for a change.”
