A father was spotted on CCTV stowing goods from an automotive store under his baby in a pram – but a store attendant says he ‘understands’ why he did it.

The father was captured at the unidentified store in Adelaide allegedly stuffing items underneath his child in a pram but when the baby made a fuss, he allegedly pulled out his waistband and pushed a GPS unit into his pants.

A worker at the automotive store told 7News he understood the father’s actions.

‘I know times are tough,’ he said.

‘But you don’t need to go to those lengths.’

He said the store had seen a rise in shoplifting attempts which were only getting ‘worse and worse’.

‘In the last three months we’ve seen it double, if not triple, the amount of stolen and lost goods.’

Recent South Australia police statistics show shoplifting in the state has risen by nearly a third in the past 12 months.

Storeowners have been victim to a spate of petty crimes as Australia’s inflation rate has escalated and is tipped to rise to 7.75 per cent in the December quarter of this year.

The incident in Adelaide recalled the showdown between a woman pushing a baby-less pram and a shop assistant out the front of a Gold Coast Supercheap Auto store in April.

The woman had allegedly stashed stolen items from the store inside her pram before her escape was foiled by the no-nonsense cashier.

The man stood in the way of the alleged thief and grabbed at the handles of the pram.

Viral footage circulated of the woman screaming ‘Let my baby go’, to which the employee replied, ‘You haven’t even got a baby in there’ during the dramatic stoush.

The woman then pushed a bundle from the pram to the ground.

But instead of a baby, a few large and allegedly stolen boxes lay on the pavers.

She  then departed the scene while calling the store attendant a ‘f***head’.

The attendant left the employ of the automotive chain store soon after when it expressed its disagreement with how the employee handled the incident.
