The number of fatal accidents in the national capital fell by 15 percent in January this year compared to the same month in 2023, officials said on Saturday.
Accident control measures, including spatial analysis of the accident locations, have resulted in a reduction in the number of accidents both during the day and at night, an official statement from the Delhi Traffic Police said.
According to the official data, a total of 97 fatal accidents were reported in January, compared to 114 in January.
The city reported 322 ‘simple accidents’ in January this year and 313 in the same month last year.
A total of 99 people were killed in accidents in 2024 and 394 were injured this year. The data shows that the number of people killed and injured in January 2023 was 116 and 423, respectively.
Data from January 2024 compared to the same month the year before also showed a decrease in the number of uninjured and ‘simple accidents’ by 36.4 percent and 2.9 percent respectively.
Road injuries are often seen as a serious public health problem. They have a significant socio-economic impact on society and are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions, disability and mortality. It is among the top ten causes of fatal accidents and disabilities, the traffic police statement said.
Examination of the day and night data showed that most simple accidents occurred during the day, while fatal accidents occurred mainly at night.

To determine the accident-prone areas in Delhi, the unit conducted a spatial analysis of the accident locations. The aim of the analysis was to identify local risk factors responsible for these black spots and then propose specific corrective measures based on these factors, the report said.
A total of 196 vehicles, including eight buses, 33 passenger cars, two cranes, four trucks and 16 two-wheelers, were involved in the accidents in 2024, while 130 vehicles were involved in 2023, the data showed.
