Fashion lover lists five trends she wants to see die in 2023 from dad sneakers to denim maxi skirts

A fashion enthusiast has revealed the five style trends she thinks should go “in the trash,” from dad sneakers to wearing blazers over activewear.

Katrina Matias shared why trends like denim maxi skirts, Ugg boots and suit jackets “must die” when paired with outfits and many agreed with her hot takes.

She said mixing blazers with activewear will look outdated in 10 years, while Ugg boots shouldn’t be worn with “cute outfits” and chunky sneakers remind her of a “daddy mowing the lawn.”

“This isn’t against anyone, this is just against these trends and why I think they should be trashed,” Katrina, who is from Sydney, said in a TikTok clamp.

First on her list was a tendency to wear blazers over sportswear like leggings and sports bras.

“This has to die, I can’t take it anymore, I can’t see it anymore,” she said.

Katrina thought the trend will be looked back on in 10 to 15 years in the same way as the “business casual to the club” style of the early 2010s.

“You know when we see 2010 and 2011 girls in peplum tops and blazers at the club? This will be the equivalent in 10 to 15 years, I tell you, this has got to go,” she said.

Katrina said she “doesn’t look good” with denim maxi skirts, a trend that has come back from the 1990s.

“Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the way it looks on a lot of people, but there’s something that isn’t quite right,” she said.

Next on Katrina’s list were matching outfits with matching slacks and button-up cardigans.

Five fashion trends Katrina thinks they ‘have to go’

1. Blazers over sportswear – ‘You know when we see girls from 2010 and 2011 in peplum tops and blazers at the club? That will be the equivalent in 10 to 15 years.’

2. Denim maxi skirts – ‘I actually like how it looks on a lot of people, but something isn’t quite right. I don’t feel like it, I’m not a fan.’

3. Suit trousers with matching waistcoat – ‘I can’t imagine taking a monocle out of their little hip pocket and I just can’t get around it.’

4. Dad Sneakers – ‘I hate it, I’m sorry. When I see this, I can only imagine a father mowing the lawn.’

5. Ankle Boots Uggs – “Ugg boots go with sweatpants and pajamas, they don’t go with cute outfits.”

“I really wanted to like it, I really did, but you know what, I can’t stop imagining taking a monocle out of their little hip pocket and I just can’t get around it,” she said.

Sturdy runners or “dad sneakers” were an accessory that Katrina says she has a hard time embracing.

“This outfit is super cute, I really love the outfit, but there are so many better shoes you could have used for this,” she said referring to an image she found online.

The last trend Katrina disliked was “mini” ankle-high Ugg boots which she admitted were more popular in the US than in Australia.

“I think that’s because this is where Uggs come from and we know better, but in the States I don’t know why the whole mini Ugg boot thing is a trend,” she said.

Next on Katrina's list was matching slacks and a button-up cardigan.

“Ugg boots go with sweatpants and tights and pajamas, they don’t go with cute outfits — put on a nice pair of leather boots.”

Katrina’s fashion faux pas racked up more than 423,000 views and many quickly agreed with her “valid” list.

“I think blazers just get out of hand outside the office,” said one woman, and another agreed, “I like activewear and blazers, but they don’t make sense together, like where are you going dressed like that?”

“If you love the denim maxi skirt, you just love what Instagram says you must like,” a third commented.

“I tried on that vest and I feel like I would be mistaken for a waitress anywhere. No atmosphere,’ someone joked.

“Say it louder for the people in the back, I agree 1000000 percent, I CANNOT get around the dad’s shoes at all,” chimed in one viewer.

Five Fashion Trends That ‘Can Stay’, According to Katrina

1. Birkenstock Clogs – ‘I used to be the biggest hater of these because my dad would wear them, then they became trendy and I had to eat my words because I actually really like how they can be styled.’

2. Tailored pants – ‘Obviously this is a style that has been around for decades, it’s not something new, but it has entered more mainstream trends. Very easy to combine, super versatile, a really nice basic.’

3. Mary Jane Shoes – ‘It’s coming back slowly. I’ve loved them since I was a kid. They are super feminine and very tight.’

4. Wide, slouchy jeans – ‘I really like how relaxed they are and also how comfortable they are. I could just wear a T-shirt and not let my waistband dig into my ribs when I eat.”

5. Coach Tabby Bag – ‘I got this in a beige neutral color, it’s two shades and it matches, when I say it all I mean it. It’s such a good staple in my wardrobe.”

However, not everyone was convinced and defended their favorite trends.

“I love all those outfits and trends are meant to shrink in 20 years, that’s the funny thing about it,” one viewer commented.

“I don’t know, I like them all,” said a second, and another added, “Denim maxi skirts are so much fun anyway.”

The New Balance dad sneakers have been the most divisive among the trends, sparking heated debate among fashionistas, with many claiming they are “cute,” especially with “activewear to match.”

“The New Balance sneaker phase is just not something I can get into,” one woman replied.

“Daddy’s sneakers have to go,” exclaimed another.

“You lost me at dad sneaker, LIVE for the dad shoe,” one hit back, and another joked, “I agree, except for the New Balance dad shoes, they are so cute and comfortable.”
