The upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film 28 Years Later is the sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.
While most films use cameras from German manufacturer ARRI Group, director Danny Boyle decided the first ’28’ film in 18 years needed something different.
Filming for 28 Years Later wrapped this summer — and it was shot using a number of modified iPhone 15s, WIRED reported.
With a budget of $75 million, 28 Years Later is the biggest film ever made on an iPhone, following in the footsteps of a new Apple TV series.

Aaron’s English fellow actors Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell also star in 28 Years Later.
A sequel has already been ordered: 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. It will be directed by Nia DaCosta of The Marvels.
28 Days Later was a genre-defining film because it was the first film to portray zombies as lightning fast, rather than slow and sluggish.
The films are set 28 days, weeks and years after a deadly virus breaks out in London, infecting everyone and turning them into bloodthirsty killers.
Anthony Dod Mantle will serve as cinematographer for 28 Years Later. He and Danny won an Oscar in 2009 for their work on Slumdog Millionaire.
Anthony was also the cinematographer on 28 Days Later, as well as Danny’s other films 127 Hours (2010), Trance (2013) and T2 Trainspotting (2017).
Filming for 28 Years Later wrapped in late August. Until now, the production has kept secret that the film was shot on smartphones. The crew had to sign nondisclosure agreements to prevent such details from being made public.
But there has been a clue online for a few months: a single paparazzi photo from a portfolio of 150, taken in July, shows Jodie standing close to a movie camera is connected to a protective cage containing what could be an iPhone, a professional cinematographer who was not involved in the film told WIRED.

That Apple smartphones were the primary camera system in 28 Years Later was later confirmed to WIRED by several people involved with the film, who noted that the specific model used for filming was the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
In August, Danny’s “strict security measures” guarding the set of 28 Days Later sent goosebumps through the crowd.
Local residents were left in shock after being ‘shouted at’ by a number of robots guarding the location.
28 Years Later will be in theaters on June 20, 2025.
