Fans have taken to social media to criticize the decision to award Liverpool a late penalty against Manchester United on Sunday after new footage emerged.

Luis Diaz fired Jurgen Klopp’s men ahead at Old Trafford and the visitors were in complete control before Bruno Fernandes pounced on a Jarell Quansah error to level matters after the break.

Kobbie Mainoo was the man of the moment in the 67th minute, giving United a surprise lead with a fantastic striker’s goal.

In the final minutes of the match, Harvey Elliott appeared to be tripped in the penalty area by Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the referee pointed to the spot.

However, new slow-motion footage has emerged since the match and fans are not convinced a penalty should have been awarded.

The footage, uploaded by a Man United fan, showed Wan-Bissaka making the challenge before Elliott knocked the ball away from him before appearing to hook his foot under Wan-Bissaka’s back leg.

As the footage went viral, many fans had their say, with one saying: ‘I didn’t see the game yesterday but how did this happen?’

Another suggested Premier League referees are ‘incompetent’ and criticized the use of VAR, which reviewed the incident but did not overturn the decision on the pitch.

“I always laugh when I think of English referees,” they began. ‘Many are so incompetent and sentimental, it’s funny.

“Do these guys understand what VAR is and what it is used for?”

This sentiment was echoed by a fellow supporter, who compared it to the late penalty Man United conceded against Chelsea on Thursday evening.

They wrote: ‘I’ve watched this video a million times and also watched Chelsea’s penalty a million times. WTF are these decisions?

‘Why on earth does VAR exist when such penalties are given!?’

Another Man United supporter contacted PGMOL, the body responsible for refereeing matches in English football.

When will @FA_PGMOL be held accountable for decisions like this?’ they smoked. ‘The three penalties against United in the last two games are absolutely scandalous.’

A final fan suggested the decision ‘looks worse in slow motion’, suggesting that if VAR had not shown the footage at a slower speed the penalty would not have been given.

This point opens the race for the Premier League title, with Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal all hoping to be crowned champions by the end of the season.
