Fans reacted after England’s Sam Curran was made the most expensive player in IPL history following Friday’s auction.

Six franchises submitted offers for Curran, however these were turned down after the Punjab Kings offered £1.9m for the England all-rounder.

The record-breaking offer comes on the heels of his impressive performances during England’s T20 World Cup victory and fans were quick to post memes about the lucrative deal.

One fan simply posted a GIF of two Simpsons characters having a ‘money fight’ and wrote the caption: ‘Harry Brook Vs Sam Curran’.

“Sam Curran is partying tonight,” another user claimed.

England cricketer Alexandra Hartley posted a meme of a man enthusiastically eating popcorn and captioned it: “Sam Curran right now!”

Royal Challengers Bangalore shared a GIF of Tom Cruise’s iconic phrase “Show me the money” and wrote: “Sam Curran right now on 1850L.”

TV presenter Piers Morgan chimed in with his views, writing: ‘Sam Curran becomes most expensive player in IPL auction history… £1.84m. Merry Christmas.’

Batsman Harry Brook was sold for over £1.3m after Sunrisers Hyderabad outbid Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore for the Yorkshire star.

Social media users were quick to post hilarious memes about the lucrative offer.

Curran was named player of the tournament following England’s victory in the T20 World Cup

However, some users offered brutal criticism, with one writing: ‘Why? That must be the worst buy in IPL history. Even worse than some of the Royal Challengers Bangalore’.

The offer for Curran broke the previous record that was set last year when the Rajasthan Royals bought South African all-rounder Chris Morris for £1.6m.

His value skyrocketed after a standout campaign at the T20 World Cup last month. He was named player of the tournament after picking up 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 as England became world champions in over-20 and over-50 cricket.

Some users were not convinced of the high price paid for the England star.

Other offers saw Test captain Ben Stokes bought by Chennai Super Kings for around £1.62 million.

There was understandable interest in Stokes, who was brilliant in England’s World Cup win with Chennai beating four other franchises to secure his services.

Joe Root did not sell at its base price of one million rupees, just over £100,000, as in its only previous auction appearance in 2018.

There is still a chance that Root will be claimed later in the team building process.
