Fans of the BBC show Ghosts expressed their devastation after learning that the series had been axed.
The broadcaster confirmed that filming on the fifth series of Ghosts had wrapped up for good on Friday, despite it having been nominated for a BAFTA for Best Scripted Comedy.
First airing in 2019, Ghosts follows a cash-strapped young couple who inherit a ramshackle country mansion, only to find it crawling with needy ghosts.
The team behind the hit show decided it was time to say goodbye to the Button House denizens and focus on new projects, sharing an emotional tribute online.
They wrote: “After an incredible five years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided the time is right to put our beloved comedy Ghosts to rest in peace.”

“We just finished filming our fifth and final series and we can’t wait to share it with all of you later this year.
We could never have imagined the reception the show had, or the fun we had making it, and we’d like to thank our incredible cast and crew, as well as everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to express their sadness at the end of the show, with many paying tribute.
