Fans were left baffled after Arsenal and Lyon held a penalty shootout despite the Gunners winning 3-0, with Rayan Cherki producing what is surely one of the worst Panenka tries ever made.

First-half goals from Gabriel Magalhaes, Eddie Nketiah and Fabio Vieira secured victory for Mikel Arteta’s side on Thursday.

Despite the convincing win, the two teams held to a penalty shootout in the first of their Dubai Super Cup matches.

This left fans confused as one tweeted: ‘Someone please enlighten me. Why do they have to have to play penalty shootouts when Arsenal won the game 3-0 in regulation? I’m confused.’

A second said: “Despite winning 3-0, Arsenal’s game against Lyon has gone to a penalty shootout due to the strange tournament rules.”

And a third added: ‘Wait, how did Arsenal win 3-0 and then go to penalties? I am so baffled that someone explain to me.

Arsenal secured a bonus point by winning a 2-1 penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Karl Hein making four saves in a subpar game.

The worst penalty was saved until the end when Hein caught Cherki’s Panenka, and the Estonian made his fourth save.

And fans weren’t impressed.

One fan tweeted: “Probably the worst penalty shootout ever.”

A second said: ‘I’ve just seen some of the worst penalties from both teams, worse than Spain against Morocco.’

The result gives Arsenal four points at the start of the friendly competition, in which Liverpool and AC Milan also participate.

Arsenal will face the Italian champions on Tuesday before flying back to London to continue their preparations for the resumption of the Premier League season.
