Fans claim Lucy Bronze was ‘in Jennifer Hermoso’s head’ ahead of her missed penalty and praise the England fullback’s ‘mind games’ in World Cup final

Fans have praised the mind games Lucy Bronze played ahead of Jennifer Hermoso’s missed penalty in the World Cup final.

England trailed 1–0 after Olga Carmona’s opener, before Keira Walsh allegedly hand-handled the ball in the penalty area.

Hermoso was preparing for the penalty and as she did so she was met by a cheery Bronze protesting the placement of the ball on the spot.

The England fullback was adamant that Hermoso had put the ball too far forward and, after raising the issue with the referee, had the ball moved further back.

And much to the delight of England fans at home, who shared their thoughts on the matter via social media soon after.

One fan commented: ‘Lucy Bronze great work annoying the penalty taker. Came into her head. Earps did indeed go off her line, but the pen was thought of.’

Lucy Bronze is the reason why that penalty kick was missed. Brilliant stuff,” wrote another.

“How could Lucy Bronze not be booked for her antics before that penalty,” one fan asked – with laughing emojis accompanying the post.

Full marks to Lucy Bronze for delaying Spain’s penalty as long as possible. A team that is ready should never let the opponent pick up a pen,” one user wrote.

Another supporter took a slightly different tone, saying “Lucy Bronze would hold your hair when you puke in the toilet after a night on the show and that’s why I really love her.”

Bronze’s antics helped put Hermoso off her game and caused the Spanish star to send her shot into the clutches of England’s Mary Earps.

Spain took the lead in the first half after Real Madrid’s Olga Carmona struck to open the scoring in Australia.

The Spanish full-back gave her side the lead in the 29th minute of play by driving forward and placing a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

As she rode off in celebration, the 23-year-old lifted her shirt to reveal a message on her compression top.

It has now been revealed, via a post on Twitterthat her message read: ‘Merchi’ and was dedicated to Carmona’s former school – Colegio Mercedes.
