Fans call for ‘perfect’ group to perform national anthem at the Super Bowl: ‘Brought tears to my eyes’

Pentatonix wowed NFL fans with their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner on Christmas Day.

The acapella group was given the honor of performing the national anthem prior to the Houston Texans’ celebratory game against the Baltimore Ravens on December 25, where Beyoncé also performed a breathtaking halftime show.

The five-part harmony left many at NRG Stadium in awe as the camera panned to NFL stars such as CJ Stroud and Lamar Jackson.

And almost a week later, NFL fans online are still raving about the “beautiful and inspiring” rendition.

Many fans took to social media to praise the vocalists and left glowing reviews of the performance.

‘Holy cow! That brought tears to my eyes. Incredible!! Perfect, literally perfect,” gushed one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘Wow! Goosebumps! Great performance by @PTXofficial and God bless America,” echoed another emotional social media user.

“Absolutely incredible version of the national anthem,” a third wrote, while another added: “They killed this!”

“wow…phenomenal anthem,” one fan posted among the enthusiastic comments, while another fan jumped in to say, “Beautiful and inspiring!! Tears in my eyes!!’

Whitney Houston’s rendition at the 1991 Super Bowl has long been hailed as one of the best renditions of the Star Spangled Banner.

However, some NFL fans felt that Pentatonix’s version was one of the best since Houston’s iconic performance, even rivaling the pop legend.

‘I thought she was great! I also think the Pentatonix anthem was the best thing since Whitney did it decades ago,” one user shared, also referencing Beyoncé’s halftime show.

“Probably one of, if not the best rendition of the national anthem I’ve heard in a long time,” another raved about Pentatonix.

Best thing since Whitney Houston sang the national anthem,” a third agreed. ‘Finally an achievement I can get behind! As a veteran and American who is feeling very uncomfortable right now, I am so proud! Bravo.’

Meanwhile, Pentatonix left some NFL fans so impressed that they called on the group to deliver a repeat performance – on the NFL’s biggest stage.

“Get ’em back for the Super Bowl anthem! Perfect,” one fan insisted, while another story seemed to agree that the quintet would “sing any national anthem.”

Pentatonix, currently consisting of singers Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee and Kevin Olusola, is from nearby Arlington, Texas. Sallee replaced former member Avi Kaplan as the group’s foundation in 2017.

The group formed in 2011 and went on to win the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, and went on to win three Grammy Awards. Last year they were even honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

They are traditionally known for their pop-style arrangements featuring vocal harmonies and covers or medleys of well-known hits, but have previously performed the national anthem prior to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship.
