- Social media ripped at the United stars over their role in the disastrous mistake
Fans have bemoaned Harry Maguire’s mistake giving Sevilla an early goal in their Europa League quarter-final second leg.
The England centre-back was caught by a Sevilla player, allowing Youssef En-Nesyri to shove the ball in from close range and put them ahead.
Maguire was not alone in being criticized for the goal, David de Gea was also criticized for his pass that led to the foul.
The incident came in the eighth minute of the match in Spain, with the aggregate score 2–2, as De Gea attempted to play out from his penalty area.
He fired a ball into the feet of England’s centre-back, but was quickly pounced on by three Sevilla players before El-Nesyri finally hammered the ball in.

Fans immediately flocked to social media to voice their thoughts on the incident and they didn’t hold back their brutal views.
Internet personality Mark Goldbridge wrote, ‘That’s on Maguire for me. De Gea plays a ball that isn’t easy, but it’s what you do when you play from behind. He’s got plenty of options, Harry, and he’s got it all wrong.’
However, many United fans argued that the England centre-back was helpless in the situation and that the Spanish goalkeeper should have done more to help.
Maguire gets most of the blame for that, but why the hell is De Gea passing it on to him when he has three Sevilla players behind him. Wan-Bissaka was free on the right,” said another.
Some viewers blamed Maguire for wanting the ball in such a dangerous position
One user wrote: ‘David de Gea, the complete goalkeeper and his shocking decision making, imagine passing someone who has been marked by 2 people. Look at people blaming only Maguire, it’s Brentford again,” said one fan.
Reminiscent of De Gea against Eriksen at Brentford. De Gea didn’t help Maguire there, but there’s no awareness of what’s going on,” one user commented.
Another wrote: ‘Although Maguire demands the ball, De Gea should know that Maguire doesn’t have the skills to get out of that situation. If it’s Martinez, he’ll probably get out of there with possession because he’s so good under pressure. Should look again but think pass to AWB was enabled’.
However, others believe De Gea should never have put his United team-mate in that predicament

Robbie Savage suggested David de Gea was to blame for Sevilla’s opening goal
Robbie Savage, co-commentary for BT Sport, seemed to agree with the idea that it was de Gea’s fault for the goal.
United are trying to play out at the back. Maguire can do better, but why doesn’t David de Gea clear the ball to Wan-Bissaka?’ he said.
“The central defender is in the middle of a triangle with three players all closing in on him. Yes, it’s Maguire’s fault, but De Gea is definitely going to pass the ball to Wan-Bissaka. Very poor.’
The early goal immediately put United at a disadvantage in the game and left them with the task of overturning the deficit to progress to the semi-finals.
