Fans baffled as Floyd Mayweather seems to fire referee mid-fight in John Angelo Gotti III rematch

Last night saw the long-awaited rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and John Angelo Gotti III.

However, it wasn’t what many expected. There were no wow moments or knockouts from either fighter and most of the two-minute rounds seemed to pass without any significant punches being thrown.

There was one moment in the fight, however, that left fans completely stunned, when Mayweather was ejected by the referee in the second round of the fight. The unusual moment came after Gotti complained that Mayweather had given him a “rabbit punch” – a blow to the back of the head.

In this case, however, Mayweather did not throw a single punch. Instead, Mayweather used a long hook that wrapped around Gotti’s head. Much to Mayweather’s chagrin, the referee stopped the fight to give Gotti a chance to recover.

Fans feared for a split second that there would be a repeat of the fight from the last match, but instead Mayweather called for the referee to ‘step aside’. To the shock of many, he was replaced and a new third man stood in the ring.

A fan wrote on the social media platform ‘X’: ‘I’ve never seen this before. Mayweather fired the referee in the middle of a fight.’

While a second person commented ‘Mayweather fires the ref in the middle of a fight. That was crazy to see lol. That smirk at the end…’

Meanwhile, a third felt the need to say that the moment was simply madness.

Other fans compared the moment to what you would see in the WWE.

One fan wrote: ‘Another #MayweatherGotti fight, another clown moment.

“This time the referee was fired and replaced during a fight. I really hope no one paid for this glorified WWE nonsense in a boxing ring,” they added.

As a second person noted:

“Floyd Mayweather threw out the referee,” followed by a smiley face and “All WWE Edition.”

When the new referee entered the ring, the fight proceeded without any problems.

Since it was an exhibition bout, neither fighter seemed eager to please the crowd or assert their dominance.

From the sixth round onwards the crowd started booing loudly, but Mayweather wasn’t really impressed. He just enjoyed giving Gotti the occasional uppercut.

While Gotti looked happy to take them. During Mayweather’s post-fight interview, the crowd continued to boo as he spoke.
