Social media has erupted after Jurgen Klopp admitted that he was ‘close to calling in’ upon hearing Gabby Agbonlahor savagely criticise Manchester United following their 4-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

Agbonlahor called the performance from Erik ten Hag’s team ‘amateur’, and was particularly critical of United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who he said was the ‘worst possible teammate’ and that he couldn’t remember ‘the last time he had a decent game’.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford on Monday, Klopp admitted that Agbonlahor’s comments had incensed him so much that he had considered phoning in to complain.

Jurgen Klopp slammed Gabby Agbonlahor for his comments after Manchester United lost to Brentford

The former Aston Villa forward made a number of contentious comments following the game

‘I drove home after watching the first half here [at the training ground] and I listened to talkSPORT and Gabby [Agbonlahor].’

‘He lost against us 6-0 in my first year, so I couldn’t remember him as a mentality monster on the pitch then – but what he said about Man Utd in that show, I was close to calling in and telling him: ‘You forgot completely that you were a player’. Klopp said.

‘And if ex players go already like this, you can imagine how everything else is going. You have to ask yourself how you want to react in a situation like this.’

The Liverpool manager’s impassioned censure of Agbonlahor’s comments led to United supporters on social media paying respect to the rival coach.

United fans on social media reacted to Klopp criticising Agbonlahor and defending their team

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Even Jurgen Klopp, the Manager of our bitter rivals is defending United and owning Gabby Agbonlahor in the process – Someone had to finally shut Gabby up, he talks too much, he’ll be gutted about what JK said as he’s normally up his arse.

Another United fan agreed: ‘Fair play to Klopp, even being bitter rivals he can see through bullshit when it’s there and talksport is mostly bulls***. Agbonlahor talks like he was a legend of the game when in reality he was a nobody.’

Another user added: ‘Gabby Agbonlahor’s takes are so awful he’s got the Liverpool manager actively defending Manchester United’

However, some supporters on social media saw Klopp’s comments in defence of Ten Hag’s squad as an indictment of just how bad things currently are at United.

Another user saw the humour in the situation: ‘Not Klopp defending for United because they can’t do it themselves’

@DannyUTD7 agreed: ‘You know we’re in a bad position when even Jurgen Klopp could slam Agbolanhor because of Manchester United.’

Klopp also referenced Liverpool’s 6-0 hammering of Agbonlahor’s Villa in 2016

After a winless start to the campaign, United will face their toughest test of the season so far when they play Klopp’s Liverpool on Monday.

The capture of Real Madrid star Casemiro is set to be announced in the coming days and should lift the spirits of United fans, but the Brazil international will not be registered in time to feature against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Though both Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot have rebuffed United’s advances, the club are still looking to bring in more new arrivals before the end of the transfer window later this month.
