Nick Kyrgios made his long-awaited return to the tennis court at the Brisbane International on Monday afternoon alongside 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
The Australian tennis star has only played competitively once in the past two years after undergoing wrist reconstruction surgery last year.
Kyrgios and Djokovic recorded a hugely entertaining 4-6 7-6 8-10 victory at the Pat Rafter Arena against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies.
The match itself felt more like a practice event, with Kyrgios and Djokovic showing off some sensational trick shots and talking their way through the match.
Djokovic scored a remarkable shot around the net at one point, while Kyrgios, playing on home soil, picked up support from the fans in the arena before pulling out a tweener.
“I’m happy to share the court with Nick in his comeback,” Djokovic said after the match, to which Kyrgios replied: “I said to Novak: ‘You are the best of all time – go for it’.”
But fans on social media have marveled at Kyrgios’ sensational comeback and how entertaining the pair were.
“Djokovic and Kyrgios bring the magic to Brisbane… That internet winner was pure wizardry,” someone wrote on X.
Another added: ‘I have to say: ‘Kyrgios looks dangerously sharp – after two years of not playing! I’m looking forward to the singles tomorrow.’
“It’s like he never left #Kyrgios,” another added.
“He brings some action to an otherwise outdated sport, I’d love to see him back on the field.”
