Family share heartbreaking update on toddler mauled by two pit bulls

A boy who survived for six days after a brutal attack by two pit bulls has died in hospital from his injuries, police said.

Three-year-old Covil Allen and his mother Tasha Vega were visiting a friend in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on July 19 when the animals pounced on the boy.

The critically injured toddler underwent several emergency surgeries at Hennepin County Medical Center and as of Tuesday the family was hopeful he would survive.

But his condition deteriorated and his parents Tasha and Charles began preparations for their son’s organ donation before he passed away.

“They are the most amazing people and they don’t deserve to feel this pain,” friend Lindsey Hemmerich wrote during a fundraiser.

One of the dogs had recently given birth, and Tasha and her son had gone to the house in the 7500 block of N. Brooklyn Park Drive to look at some puppies.

Officers who arrived at the scene said they had “never seen anything so horrific” after breaking through a neighbor’s fence to retrieve the animals, said Police Inspector Elliot Faust.

They shot both animals dead, but not before the dogs seriously injured the boy’s mother as she desperately tried to save her son.

“Tasha has already had two surgeries and will need a third surgery on her calf to repair the damage. She will need a skin graft,” Lindsey wrote.

Her husband Dustin posted a shocking photo from the emergency room on Tuesday after Covil underwent yet another surgery.

“Covil was originally in the operating room for seven hours before being rushed to HCMC,” he wrote.

‘Covil went in for emergency surgery on Saturday. He had lost some circulation in his leg. He came out fine, they got the blood flowing; now the muscle is not responding, so they’re keeping an eye on that.

“Keep my coves in your thoughts and prayers!! We need all the prayers we can get,” Tasha wrote on Facebook on Sunday

“It could still come back. So pray it does! They also did a CT scan of his head to make sure there’s no brain hemorrhage. Covil’s right chest tube was removed today.

“His intracranial pressure has dropped slightly (that’s a goal) compared to yesterday.”

But the next day a Gofundme The appeal was made after doctors concluded there was little hope of recovery.

“Chuck, Tasha and Christian have started Life Source to donate Covil’s organs,” Lindsey wrote.

“By doing this, we honor Covil’s life and save the lives of more children, in the hope that no other parent will have to endure the pain they are now experiencing.”

The fundraiser has already raised $25,000 of the $35,000 goal.

One dog died on the spot, the other was put down later.

Inspector Faust said charges may be forthcoming.

“Our detectives are currently investigating the case and will soon submit it to a prosecuting authority for review,” he added.

Nicholas Chitwood was hailed a hero after he came to the aid of six-year-old Lillian and stopped the adult pit bull at their grandparents’ home in Saginaw, Michigan.

There will be extensive nerve damage to the girl’s face, and doctors have yet to determine if more surgeries are needed. She is still in a lot of pain. The dog was put down.

According to the American Veterinary Association, approximately 800,000 people are hospitalized each year in the U.S. for dog bites. Pit bulls are responsible for the most attacks of any kind.

They are also more likely to kill their victims, accounting for 28 percent of deaths over a 20-year period, according to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
