Aaron Shattock remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being placed in an induced coma following an accident on his property on Sunday.

The former Brisbane Lions star was left fighting for his life after being crushed by a digger.

7News claimed the 44-year-old father of three was ‘driving the excavator’ before it rolled over, trapping Shattock under the machine. Emergency services used hydraulic rescue equipment to free him from the excavator before Shattock was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

His family have broken their silence on the incident and released a statement on Christmas Day through the Labrador Football Club, thanking those who sent messages of support to the former Brisbane and Port Adelaide player.

“The Shattock family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love and kindness shown to Aaron during this incredibly challenging time,” the family statement said.

“Your compassion has given him – and our entire family – the strength and hope to keep fighting.

Premiership winner Shattock made his debut for the Lions in 2000.

He would help the club win the 2002 Grand Final, which was a trade-off to see his side beat Collingwood.

The 6ft 4in midfielder would play 57 games for Brisbane before joining Port Adelaide in 2005.

He would later be dropped by the club in 2006, after which he retired from AFL football and joined Labrador in the Queensland Australian Football League.

Following the incident, messages of support have poured in for Shattock and his family.

Three-time premiership winner Michael Voss described the midfielder as a ‘crushing good guy’.

He told the Brisbane club website: “I can’t believe it… it’s terrible at any time, but right before Christmas it’s even worse.

“Our prayers are with him and his family.”

Brisbane Lions released a statement on Sunday evening saying the former footballer had undergone emergency surgery.
