Family flees wasps’ nest after dog disturbs it on NSW south coast bushwalk when pet Miley was hit by car
A family had to run for their lives after their pet disturbed a wasp’s nest, causing one of their dogs to be run over in the chaos and plans were made for her cremation and a “last meal.”
The Piper family, from Gerringong on the NSW south coast, were out for a walk in the woods when one of their pets, Miley, accidentally disturbed a vicious wasp nest, leading them to attack the dogs.
In the midst of all the confusion, one of their pets, Princess, accidentally ran her head into a 4WD, leaving her with an injured pelvis, broken leg and broken foot.
“We escaped for our lives,” Lincoln Piper said.
“We left the swarm to chase the dogs away, but ended up with Princess running around a hill in a panic and then straight under the 4WD.”
Not knowing if Princess would live or die, and with huge rehabilitation costs, the Pipers set up a GoFundMe page aiming to raise $15,000.

But things seemed to take a turn for the worse after they set up the page with Mr Piper posting on Facebook that she was facing a worrying health battle.
“We fought hard for Princess, but unfortunately months of recovery with a very uncertain outcome is not an option,” he said.
“She can’t go to the toilet and there’s no guarantee she’ll ever be our nimble, feisty princess again.”
The family had already incurred significant expenses, they said, but offered to fully refund the money already raised.
“Alternatively, the money can pay for our expenses to date and Princess can be cremated,” Mr Piper wrote.
“I can’t even tell you how broken and broken I am. She enjoys some company with her favorite comrades and a last meal.
“I’m not looking forward to saying goodbye, because we really are best friends.”

Despite their fear that she might die, Princess somehow found inner strength – with the help of veterinary care and modern science – and the family said it “looks like she can be rehabilitated and go back to a somewhat normal life.” to lead”.
“She will require physio and hydrotherapy, in addition to ongoing consultations,” Mr Piper wrote.
In a subsequent update, Mr. Piper had better news to share with anyone following Princess’s journey closely.
“Just got off the phone with a specialist who reviewed her file and thinks it sounds like she’s in a really good place to recover,” he wrote.
“She survived the worst of the life-threatening beginning but will need testing, treatment, medications and rest to recover.”
He added that the vets all praised him for not taking the easy way out and putting the dog to sleep.
“Actually, buying her time was all she needed. They said that was and is always the very last option and that it seems like an option that was not necessary,” he said.
Mr. Piper thanked everyone who contributed to the fundraiser surpassed its goal of $15,000 Tuesday afternoon.
“Princess has a long road to recovery, but it’s a miracle she survived and I can’t thank you enough. If it wasn’t for all of you, she would have had to be put to sleep,” he said.
One of nearly 500 donations to the GoFundMe for Princess was $1,000, with many of the funders also leaving comments and well wishes.

“I could never imagine losing my fur baby,” one wrote.
“I wish I could give more, but I hope you’re all right,” said another.
A third spoke for many by saying, “I don’t know who you are, I don’t know where you live, but I do know what it feels like to be broke and have to keep your pup alive.”
‘You’ll make it work, you’ve got it in you. Go do what you have to do.’
