Fabio Cannavaro has reportedly attempted to resign from his managerial position at Benevento after leading just four games and racking up just two points.

The 49-year-old, who has previously had successful management in Asia, tendered his resignation after the Serie B side lost their second consecutive league game to Como and dropped to 15th place in the Italian second division.

But his request was ‘forcefully’ rejected by Serie B club president Oreste Vigorito after the 2006 World Cup winner joined the squad in September.

He replaced former manager Fabio Caserta, who also struggled with Benevento this season, winning just two of his six games.

Still, Cannavaro, who recently admitted he was in talks to take over both Everton and Wolves, claimed there was no malice in his firing attempts.

‘I resigned because I thought it was a decent act, and because [Pasquale] Foggia is not only a sports director, but also a friend,” he said AS.

“To make things very clear, I took a step back, but the president was very forceful in his rejection and that, I admit, made me happy.”

The 2006 Ballon d’Or winner is expected to meet with the club president in the coming days to discuss the situation further.

After five previous managerial stints since he hung up his shoes in 2011, including a stint as the boss of the Chinese national team, this is the former Real Madrid centre-back’s first central role in Europe.

Cannavaro also enjoyed great success in Asia, winning both the Chinese Super League and the Chinese Super Cup with Guangzhou Evergrande, before leaving the club in September 2021, and according to The Telegraph was ready to take on a managerial job in Europe.

Still, it looks like things aren’t going so well in his first position in Italy, with his side moving to 15th in the Serie B ladder, just two places from the relegation zone.

Amid a crisis at the club, the 2006 Ballon d’Or winner was confident that Benevento would emerge from this difficult period.

He said: ‘The players listen to me, but they make too many mistakes and need to understand the difference between playing and winning. To get it, you need a claw.

“President Vigorito believes the timing depends on his players and has chosen to concentrate the whole group until the next game, Saturday against Pisa.

“I see the President’s position as a gesture of great confidence to come out of this stronger.

“I accept concentration, a measure that will help us to be united and start over.”

One of the most decorated players in football history, Cannavaro made 677 professional appearances during his club career, amassing 136 caps for Italy to become the second most capped Italian player of all time, wearing the captain’s armband 79 times.
