The FA has confirmed that both Manchester United and Crystal Palace have been charged after a ‘mass confrontation’ in their Premier League clash this month.

During the match at Old Trafford on February 4, both sets of players became embroiled in a pitch brawl which resulted in United midfielder Casemiro being sent off.

Despite Casemiro’s first sending off, United managed a vital 2-1 win against the Eagles, but the fallout from the brawl has now hit both teams.

A statement from the FA read: ‘Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have been charged following a mass confrontation between their players in the 67th minute of a Premier League match on Saturday 4 February 2023.

It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure that their players behaved in an orderly manner and/or refrained from provocative behaviour, and it is also alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure that their players refrained from violent behaviour.

Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have until Monday 13 February 2023 to respond.

The incident started when Palace player Jeffrey Schlupp knocked Casemiro’s international teammate Antony off the pitch, prompting the Brazilian to push the Ghanaian off the pitch.

A 20-person melee ensued, and once it had ended, VAR officer Tony Harrington told the man in the middle that the Casemiro incident required further inspection using the pitch monitor.

Marriner walked up to the monitor and agreed with Harrington, before returning to the pitch to wave the red card at the midfielder.

It was the first time Casemiro had received a straight red card while playing for his former club Real Madrid, or in 30 games in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Following Casemiro’s sending off, Crystal Palace recovered a goal through Ghana’s Jeffrey Schlupp, but could not find an equalizer as it finished 2-1 to the hosts.

The incident shocked the football world and drew criticism from Gabby Agbonlahor, who claimed that Casemiro should have been ‘arrested’.

Casemiro was ruled out of United’s next three domestic games, including back-to-back games with rivals Leeds, as well as a home clash with Leicester City.

The Red Devils drew 2-2 with Leeds in their Old Trafford clash as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford salvaged a point for the hosts.

Despite the suspension, Casemiro will return in time for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at the end of the month.
