After F1’s charged opening day in Las Vegas, both final practice and qualifying went to plan, culminating in Leclerc taking pole in qualifying in a Ferrari at 1-2.
But Sainz will start the Las Vegas GP from 12th place due to a 10-place grid penalty caused by his Ferrari being destroyed in FP1 by the separated water valve cover. The rules state that he had to take the penalty for using an additional energy storage despite this being due to a track error.
Sainz’s penalty promotes Max Verstappen to the front row for Red Bull, while George Russell moves into third for Mercedes.
Pierre Gasly also benefits from achieving his highest starting position of the season with fourth place for Alpine, ahead of an impressive qualifying for Williams with Alex Albon fifth and Logan Sargeant sixth.
It was a tough qualifying for Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez, both eliminated in Q2, and Sainz’s grid drop will see them start 10th and 11th respectively.
Lance Stroll took a five-place grid drop for overtaking under yellow flags in final practice, relegating him to 19th.
