‘Uncontrolled fuel leak’: Moment F-15 fighter jet has to make emergency landing after it started leaking fuel in California

  • During a morning training session, an F-15 started dumping fuel ‘uncontrollably’ from both wings

A National Guard F-15C Eagle Fighter jet had to make an emergency landing in California after it dumped fuel.

The jet, part of the 144th Fighter Wing, made a landing at Fresno Yosemite International Airport on Thursday during a morning training session.

Fuel came out of both wings, but it was said not to be dangerous to the nearby population.

“Most of the fuel would have disappeared before it hit the ground,” Sergeant Charles Vaughn said.

In the air traffic control audio, the pilot of the plane can be heard saying, “I’m dumping fuel from both wings… Uncontrolled fuel leak.”

The plane landed safely on the runway while another F-15 flew directly above it to follow the descent.

The pilot asked for cable chains to be laid across the runway to help him stop, according to Fox 26.

Emergency services quickly cleared the runway for fuel after landing.

The 144th Fighter Wing is investigating the incident and it is unclear what started the fuel leak.

The F-15s enter service in 1985 and the military plans to phase them out.

Congressman Jim Costa recently sent a letter requesting funding to bring new F-35A aircraft to base, as he believes the jets will be obsolete by 2028.
