Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane: Extreme weather warning for Australia over the next three days – with a 46C heatwave and a massive rain bomb

Extreme heat will continue to heat parts of Australia, while cold and wet fronts will wet the other side of the country.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, severe thunderstorms and an incoming rain bomb will sweep the entire east coast, stretching from Victoria through New South Wales, Queensland and into northern Australia.

Senior meteorologist Jonathan Hoe said the storms are caused by a surface trough ‘which drags down a lot of tropical moisture from the north and east of the country.’

This will bring heavy rain to northern NSW and Queensland, while storms will wreak havoc across northern parts of the country.

While showers will cool Sydney to the mid-20s over the next few days, many other capital cities will see temperatures rise above 30 degrees over the next few days.

Northern NSW and southern Queensland are on high alert for possible flash flooding and severe thunderstorms, with motorists advised to proceed with caution and avoid driving through flooded red lights.

Strong winds threaten to topple power lines and trees, which could lead to localized power outages in country Victoria and north-eastern NSW.

On the other side of the country, a cold front is moving through parts of southern Western Australia.

Sandwiched between the cold front and the trough is a high pressure system over South Australia.

Victoria and Tasmania will also be subject to a high pressure system, which will reduce some of the humidity, leading to drier air and also clearer skies.

“We’ve seen quite a lot of wet weather… which has slowed the warming trend in Australia a bit with all this rain and storm activity,” Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe said.

‘This month it’s more about the rain and the storms.’

Northwestern and central Australia are in the midst of a heatwave that has hit the city of Paraburdoo in the Pilbara region is brewing in 46 degrees Celsius, just below the record high of 48 degrees in December.

Marble Bar is also roasting, with temperatures expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Thursday.
