Exploding chicken burns hungry customer: Bizarre moment, restaurant’s fast food snack explodes as he bites into it

This is the moment a man was burned by a fried chicken snack after the food exploded when he bit into it.

The bizarre snack-related incident was captured on CCTV at a cafe in the city of Curitiba, southern Brazil.

In the footage, a waitress hands a customer a coxinha, a Brazilian fried chicken croquette, before leaving the man unattended at the bar.

As the man prepares to eat his treat, the coxinha suddenly explodes, spraying its hot innards over the man and the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, the heat of the croquette is visible from the stream that rises to the ceiling.

The store’s owner, Christian de Souza Amaral, who witnesses the snack eruption, stands open-mouthed in shock as the dazed customer tries to wipe the burning filling from his face.

Mr. Amaral then apparently leaves to get help, leaving the man to deal with his strange situation.

It later emerged that the customer, unnamed in local media, had been treated for burns to his mouth.

Mr Amaral explained: ‘It went off with a sound similar to a tire blowing. I was shocked to see the filling sticking to his face. It looked like a bomb.”

He added: ‘We had already fried the coxinha and put it in the display case. This man was already there, he was a customer, and he said, ‘The coxinha looks nice, doesn’t it?’ and asked for one.

“It had only come out of the fryer five minutes earlier when we handed it to him.”

The bar staff gave the customer first aid, but advised him to go to hospital.

However, it is unclear why the snack exploded so violently.

Life scientist Dr. Laura Marise explained that if not handled properly, air can build up in a Coxinha and burst under pressure.

She told local media: ‘Air can become trapped between the dough and the filling and may have expanded during frying, but not enough to break through the dough.

“But when he was bitten, the coxinha must have suddenly released all that pressure, which caused the explosion.”

Coxinha – which translates to ‘little thigh’ in Portuguese, is a popular snack in Brazil consisting of shredded chicken and cheese covered in soft dough before being fried.

The savory treat comes in different sizes and is sold in most cafes and by street vendors.

It is widely believed to be one of the most popular fast food items in the South American country.

Coxinha was reportedly created by a young Brazilian prince who made the poultry-filled croquette to resemble a chicken drumstick.
