The Project’s Nazeem Hussain made the bold claim that he thinks no comics have ever really been “cancelled” while discussing cancel culture.

The 38-year-old star, who headlined Sydney comedy night Kraken Black Spiced Rum, said ‘cancellations’ usually trigger a ‘comeback’.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia this week after his stellar performance, he said: ‘I’m not convinced anyone has ever really been ‘cancelled’.

“For most comedians, it seems like their being ‘cancelled’ was just the prelude to a bigger comeback tour.”

American comedian Louis CK won a Grammy for best comedy album in 2022, just five years after being accused of sexual misconduct by several women.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Hussain further said that in the age of smartphones and the viral moment, it is difficult to try out a new prank.

“We’re all just trying to figure out what’s going on,” he said of testing the waters to figure out what an audience finds funny and what offends them.

“In this camera-everywhere era, trying out a new joke feels like walking a tightrope, and the net below is made up of angry Twitter users.”

However, the comic added that the Australian comedy scene was still thriving and many local stars were getting big laughs.

“The Australian comedy scene is so great,” he admitted.

“Aussie comedians are fearless and deliver material that is fresh, daring and hilarious,” he added.

“It helps that Australian audiences find humor in strange places, have a unique stomach for discomfort and root for the underdog.”

Nazeem, who often jokes about being mistaken for The Project host Waleed Aly, went on to say he found the comparison flattering.

“He’s a genius and one of the nicest people I know,” he said.
