The Channel 5 remake of All Creatures Great And Small, based on the series of best-selling books by real-life vet James Herriot, has been an unexpected hit with viewers.
Before it aired, some TV commentators questioned whether the show would struggle to find an audience due to audiences’ admiration for the original BBC adaptation, which was a hit between 1978 and 1990.
But the new series, starring Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Callum Woodhouse as his brother Tristan and Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey, is now one of Channel 5’s biggest hits.
The fourth series, which will be shown in the autumn, moves to the dark days of the Second World War.

In a recent interview, Ms. Shenton expressed her hopes for the relationship between James and Helen amid the turmoil of world conflict.
She said, “I hope there is more fun to be had, but I am aware that we are in the times that we are. I hope their relationship can continue to deepen.
“What I saw in the last series, what I liked, was their transition from tacky newlyweds to a team that sticks together and is there for each other.”
