EXCLUSIVE: How a very lucky Australian gambler won over $170,000 on a footy bet worth just $15

  • The astonishing result came right down to the wire
  • Gambler waited for the AFL leg to get good
  • Video captures the moment when he won a big bet

An Australian gambler captured the moment when he discovered he had won over $170,000 after spending just $15 on an extremely complex bet.

The unnamed sports fan put together a 50-leg multi with Sportsbet and correctly picked all 50 selections to earn a total of $170,330.95.

It is not known exactly what outcomes he bet on in which sports, but the video shows him sweating on one last selection to get good before the money was paid out to him.

The punter gets a phone call from a friend on the footage, and when asked if he’s officially won the bet, says he’s waiting for a crucial statistic from Richmond’s round 24 match against Port Adelaide to run his course.

Richmond’s Tim Taranto (pictured with ball) recorded 20 possession in the Tigers’ loss to power in Round 24 – and that was the last box to be checked before the unnamed gambler would win a massive payout on his 50-leg multi

β€œEarlier Tim Taranto had 19 divests so he (the Sportsbet app) said I had lost, but now if you go to the AFL app it has changed to 20, which is all I need,” explains he off to the caller.

Seconds later, Sportsbet makes it official that he won the bet, as he and his friends scream and let it fly with a few picks of profanity.

A quick check shows the AFL credited Richmond’s Taranto for the twenty disposals, while the Tigers lost to the Power 13.16 (94) to 8.15 (63).

According to Sportsbet, the multi consisted of nine multis of the same game in which he tipped players to get 20-plus or 25-plus disinvestments.

The betting went as follows: Essendon v Collingwood – seven legs, $6.40; Hawks v Dockers – six legs, $2.87; North Melbourne v Gold Coast – five legs, $2.10; Brisbane v St Kilda – four legs, $2.25; Geelong v Bulldogs – seven legs, $4.44; West Coast v Adelaide – five legs, $2.25; Port v Richmond – four legs, $2.42; Sydney v Melbourne – six legs, $2.46; Carlton v GWS – six legs, $2.20.

The stunning result is on the opposite end of the scale from another gambler’s brutal experience with a multi last year.

That gambler put together a 15-leg multi last June and chose the first 14 selections correctly, including a multi-in-a-multi selection based on how NBA star Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics would perform, along with choosing Collingwood for the Melbourne demons.

If the whole bet had come true, the gambler could win almost $1 million on his $5 bet.

Some of the other selections included the North Queensland Cowboys beating the St George Illawarra Dragons by 13 points or more in the NRL and Carlton crushing Essendon in the AFL by 25 points or more.

It all came down to Parramatta beating the Bulldogs by 13 or more points in their round 14 match, which most would have considered one of the safest legs in the multi.

Prior to that game, the Bulldogs had scored just 29 tries in 13 games and averaged just 2.2 tries per game. In contrast, the Eels had scored 52 tries, averaging four per game.

All the ingredients were in place for a Parramatta side to break into the top four in the NRL and beat the struggling Bulldogs. However, the Belmore boys had other ideas and beat the Eels 34-4 in one of the biggest upsets of the season.
