EXCLUSIVE Ella Eyre admits she still suffers from imposter syndrome and teases new ‘independent’ music: ‘It’s hard not to question yourself’

Ella Eyre has revealed that she still suffers from imposter syndrome despite being in the music industry for over 10 years.

The singer, 29, is no stranger to success having found fame in 2013 singing on Waiting All Night with drum and bass group Rudimental, who were a UK number one and won a Brit Award.

But Ella told MailOnline “it’s hard not to question yourself” as an established performer in the public eye.

In an exclusive interview to mark the launch of the new JOY wine brand, Ella said: ‘I never really knew what that meant until I heard other people talking about it and yes, it probably affects me 50% of my daily life.

“I’ve been in music for 10 years now, which is hard to believe and in the beginning I didn’t have any imposter syndrome at all because I was young, I had never released before, I had never had people’s opinions.

“It was so much easier in the beginning because I was so in love with what I was doing, so it didn’t matter for outside opinion or the outcome of it. At that point I wasn’t making any money anyway, I was just making it, it was for fun.

Ella added, “Now that I’m established, able to play these great shows and go to great countries and work with brands like JOY, sometimes you think I’m doing this right, I’m representing myself well, do I like this music, do I even like how I look, am I happy with myself.

“It’s very common for people in this industry to suffer because you have so many eyes on you and voices in your head and it’s hard not to question yourself and where you are. With live shows there’s nothing that can put me off, I absolutely love it.’

At the age of 11, Ella – who hails from Ealing, West London – was sent on a swimming scholarship to a private boarding school, Millfield, in Somerset.

But swimmer’s ear (inflammation of the ear canal) stopped a promising competitive career, so she left at the age of 16 to attend BRIT School.

Ella explained: ‘I think I’m very lucky with that because some artists come home sick, but I’ve always been independent. I went to boarding school, I was one of those people who thrived in boarding school.

“The performing element is what I live by most and it’s in the studio where I suffer the most from imposter syndrome. It is very personal to write about your experience and put your heart on paper and hope that people will like it and buy it.

“But on stage, all the tough questions and concerns go out the door for me. People bought tickets to come see you. They’re there for you. They want you to do well.”

Struggle: Ella told MailOnline ‘it’s hard not to question yourself’ as an established artist in the public eye

Ella is known for collaborating with Rudimental on their UK number one single Waiting All Night, which won the 2014 Brit Award for UK Single of the Year.

Her hits include Came Here For Love, We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off and Deep Down.

She also won Best Newcomer at the 2014 MOBO awards with her gritty soulful voice, followed last year by Best Female Act.

And her career is going from strength to strength, with another album in the pipeline due out this year.

Ella told MailOnline: ‘This year I’ve been deliberately quiet because I’ve been working on my new album. I am now independent and I take that very seriously. I’m now signed to two major labels and I was lucky that my experiences weren’t all bad, but I definitely learned a lot along the way.

“Now that I’m independent, I’m putting everything I’ve learned into this process, everything is in my hands, this power is fantastic but also extremely daunting. I want it to be perfect.

“I’m really excited to share this next chapter because it’s going to be a true representation of me as an artist because I don’t have people in my ear about whether certain radio stations will play it or streaming platforms because we’re creating a world that’s authentic.

“I am so much more involved and have a better understanding of the end goal. My imposter syndrome is a lot less now because there are fewer people to answer to.’

Ella showed off her vocal talent when she performed at the launch of new wine brand JOY in Manchester on Wednesday night.

JOY is brand new wine that was created to empower those who are fun, eye-catching, seriously unserious, inclusive and fun.

Speaking of collaborating with the brand, Ella said, “I love that it’s very inclusive, it’s a fun brand. It’s a very straight forward brand to have a relationship with!

“I also like wine and a spritz. My favorite is a white wine, but it depends on what I’m eating. The older I get, the more I experiment with my palette.

“Sometimes with wine it’s hard to know what to choose when you first start with it. You go into a supermarket and there are walls of wine, but this wine makes it easier. There’s no reason you shouldn’t like it, it takes away the hard decisions and takes your time to shop.’

Explaining what she’s like on a night out, Ella said, “I deliberately put my phone away when I’m drinking because I can’t be trusted!”

“I get really confident when I drink, I become the spokesperson for people in trouble, I defend people, or I just sing loudest at karaoke. My self-confidence rises about 500 times.’

Ella also added that she has had lots of fun nights while on tour and even missed her tour bus from Liverpool to London before because she was having too much fun.
