The driver suspected of injuring 10 pedestrians when he drove his car near Grand Central in New York City appeared emotional in court when a judge ordered he be held on $50,000 bail.

Kyle Fernandez, 20, sobbed as he faced a judge in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday during his bail hearing.

Fernandez, who has a prior criminal record that includes two gun charges and a history of drugs, now faces 12 counts of reckless endangerment, criminal possession of stolen property, operating a motor vehicle while on drugs and resisting arrest.

Last week, police said Fernandez drove a car he stole in the Bronx into a crowd of pedestrians on Lexington Avenue and its intersection with 42nd Street. He was driving in the wrong direction.

At the time, he was trying to evade the police when they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault.

The pedestrians, including two minors, ages 5 and 7, were taken to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The chaos unfolds around 5:30 p.m. on Third Avenue and 43rd Street, near Grand Central Station. Officers were alerted that a stolen car was nearby by their automatic license plate reader.

Authorities said the vehicle was stolen on July 31, the day before the fight took place.

It was later revealed that Fernandez was on the run from Manhattan police officers while driving the stolen 2018 Hyundai Tucson SUV with Illinois license plates.

A witness at the scene in Grand Central claimed to have seen a victim “fly through the air” in the collision between East 42nd and Lexington Avenues, which reportedly involved three vehicles.

Chaotic images and video showed a black and red vehicle in what appeared to be a head-on collision.

Another video showed a female victim being stretched out from the area – while passersby stare at the active crime scene.

The suspect fled the area after the accident. Video showed Fernandez running through the streets as some bystanders were overheard shouting, “go get him,” while others chased after him.

A group of pedestrians tackled him towards the group and held him there until police arrived.

Eyewitness Michael Discioarro told the New York Post“when the police showed up, the man they had taken into custody tried to fight with the police – trying to push the police away.”

Citizen reported that police at the scene described the female passenger who fled as white or Hispanic, about 100 pounds with black hair. Police continue to search for that passenger.

According to Citizen reports, she was reportedly wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and black and white sneakers and was carrying a bag as she fled west on 42nd Street.
