EXCLUSIVE: David ‘Kochie’ Koch reveals his most shocking celebrity interview ever – and if he’s still in touch with his Sunrise colleagues
David ‘Kochie’ Koch chatted to hundreds of celebrities during his 21 years as a Sunrise presenter – and he revealed on Wednesday that one interview was memorably bad.
The former Sunrise presenter, 67, told Daily Mail Australia that his 2010 interview with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama was one of the worst he had ever conducted.
“I had this preconceived notion that he would be a Zen, just floating by character. But it turns out I got it on a grumpy day,” he began.
“He was pretty feisty with staff and very un-Zen-ish.”
Kochie then said his interview with Seinfeld star Michael Richards was also a shock, as the Kramer actor randomly switched in and out of character.

“A weird interview, he came in a robe so we thought he was playing the part of Kramer. So we asked him a Kramer type question and he answered like Michael Richards.
So then we asked a serious question and he answered like Kramer. At the end of the interview we had no idea what was going on, it was ridiculous.’
The Adelaide-born star added that while he did not regret leaving Sunrise earlier this year, he did miss his former colleagues.

“Nat Barr and I have a set lunch date. And I have a WhatsApp channel with (sports reporter) Mark Beretta and Nat’s husband Andrew, we talk football,” he said.
“The channel is very hot on the weekends when we sled together. So yes, I’m still in touch with them.’
He then spoke about his new position as economic director of price comparison website Compare the Market and revealed what Australians should be doing to save money.

Making ends meet is difficult. You should get the best deal, you owe no loyalty to your energy supplier or financial institution. Compare to see what the best deal is,” he said.
Kochie also said he was thrilled that the Sunrise team found the perfect replacement co-host in Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington after he stepped down.
Shirvo is going sensationally well. Not only is he a great announcer and presenter, he’s also a great guy. He looks like a good guy on TV and he is in real life.’

Kochie, de longest-serving breakfast TV anchor in Australian history, stunned viewers in May after announcing he was leaving the program after 21 years to spend more time with family and pursue other interests.
His departure from Sunrise came just months after the expiration of the two-year contract he signed with Seven in December, meaning he still has unfinished work to do with the network.
According to The Australian Media Diarynetwork bosses are eager to get their money’s worth from the former financial expert until his contract expires in 2024.
